Artist Statement
Ryan Bautista is a Filipino American collage artist based in Los Angeles whose work explores the layered nature of identity. Through atmospheric compositions, he examines how personal history, cultural inheritance, and lived experience shape one’s sense of self.
Drawing from natural imagery such as flowers, honey bees, and monarch butterflies, Bautista builds visual environments that reflect growth, migration, fragility, and resilience. As the son of immigrants, he is interested in how identity forms between cultures and generations, and how memory continues to shape perception. His collages bring together fragments that may not initially belong, assembling them into cohesive compositions that mirror the complexity of belonging.
Bautista describes himself as an aspiring optimist or a recovering pessimist. That tension surfaces through contrast. Warm color palettes suggest hope and renewal, while striking foreground elements introduce disruption and unease. These opposing forces coexist within the same composition, reflecting the reality that we are rarely one thing at any given moment. We can feel exhausted yet hopeful, safe yet vulnerable, joyful yet grieving. His work embraces this emotional duality as an honest expression of contemporary identity.
